The origin of HDPE pipe

For more than 70 years HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) has been discovered accidentally during an experiment in the 1950s. Since then, HDPE has completely revolutionized human life. With outstanding properties of HDPE such as strong and durable, Resistant to heat and chemical, HDPE is used as a raw materials in the production of consumer products such as water bottles, shampoo bottles, toys, water pipes and many more.

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is produced from a Catalytic polymerization via catalyst. The process creates a chain of polymers under constant pressure and temperature.

The evolution of HDPE pipes started in 1959 with the first HDPE pipes manufactured according to class PE 50, with an internal pressure rating of 5 MPa (50 bar) used as sewer pipes, agricultural pipes and mine pipes. Later, the HDPE pipe industry improved HDPE polymers for pipes having higher quality and withstand higher pressure. The second generation HDPE pipes were produced with class PE 63 with an internal pressure rating of 6.3 MPa (63 bar), and PE 80 with an internal pressure rating of 8 MPa (80 bar) respectively. They are mainly used for water supply, drainage, agricultural pipes, chemical pipes, industrial pipes, etc.

In 1995, the production process of raw materials used in the production of HDPE water pipes was further developed. By using the Bimodal production technology, it allows the pipe to withstand more pressure while reducing the wall thickness. The new material is class PE100 with an internal pressure rating of 10 MPa (100 bar) and is the class used until today.

Difference between TIS.17-2532 and TIS.17-2561

TIS. or “Thai Industrial Standards” are standard procedures required for a product or service designed for the benefit of consumers organized by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute or TISI.

The Thai Industrial Standards Institute or TISI. requires all food, electrical goods, vehicles, construction materials and others to comply with the Thai Industrial Standards.

Thai Industrial Standards for rigid uPVC for drinking water classified in the mandatory standards. The standard was firstly introduced in 1972 as TIS. 17-2514. Later, two more revisions of TIS. 17-2523 and TIS. 17-2532 were implemented in the year 1980 and 1989 respectively. TIS. 17-2532 has been implemented for over 30 years until the latest revision of TIS. 17-2561 was introduced in 2019 and has been implemented since then until present.

Let us understand what the Thai Industrial Standard TIS 17-2561 is about and how is it different from TIS 17-2532

1) Rigid uPVC pipe for drinking water produced according to TIS. 17-2561 is classified with 5 pressure ratings of Class 5, Class 7, Class 8.5, Class 10.5 and Class 13.5 unlike TIS. 17-2532 which is classified with 3 pressure ratings of class 5, Class 8.5 and Class 13.5.

2) Rigid uPVC pipe for drinking water produced according to TIS. 17-2561 requires more testing on effect on water compared with TIS. 17-2532 where the smell, color and taste must not be changed and no hazardous substance and heavy metals found. The contaminate of lead cannot exceed 1,000 mg/kg and cadmium cannot exceed 100 mg/kg from the surface of the pipe. The extracted solvents from the water cannot exceed with mercury 0.001 g/cm3, lead 0.01 g/cm3, arsenic 0.01 g/cm3, Selenium 0.01 g/cm3, Chromium 0.05 g/cm3, Cyanide 0.07 g/cm3, Cadmium 0.003 g/cm3, Barium 0.7 g/cm3 and the total dissolved substance cannot exceed 70 g/cm3

3) Rigid uPVC pipe for drinking water produced according to TIS. 17-2561 have added new density parameter compared with TIS. 17-2532 where the density of PVC is 1,350-1,460 kg/m3 tested at ± 23 ℃

What does the marking on PVC pipe mean?

Thailand Industrial Standards require all pvc pipe manufacturers in Thailand to print markings every 2 meters on its pvc pipe to show the information about the pvc pipe manufactured. Nominal pipe size, Pressure Class, TIS. Standard, length of the pipe, year of manufacture, and name of manufacturer are required markings on the pipe.

Name of Manufacturer – On the PVC pipe, the name and logo of Thai Vinytech (2002) is printed, ensuring that the pvc pipes manufactured are of high quality.

Pipe Size – The diameter of the pipe is specified in millimeters and inches on the pipe. For example, 150 mm (6”) means that the pipe diameter is 150 millimeters or 6 inches.

Pressure Class – Pressure class determines the working pressure for the pvc pipe to be used at 27°C and has a unit of kilogram force per centimeter square (kgf/cm2) (1 MPa = 10.1972 kgf/cm2). For blue colored drinking water uPVC pipe produced according to TIS. 17-2561, 5 Pressure class have been introduced i.e., PN 5,PN 7, PN 8.5, PN 10.5 and PN 13.5 . For example, PN 5 uPVC pipes can have a working pressure of up to 5 bars.

TIS. or Thai Industrial Standard – Thai Vinytech (2002) uPVC pipe manufactured by Thai Vinytech (2002) Co., Ltd meets the Thai International Standard, where TIS. 17-2561 is the standard for rigid blue unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipe used for drinking water manufactured with lengths of 4 and 6 meters, and TIS. 216-2524 is the standard for rigid yellow uPVC conduit for electrical wiring and telecommunication cables.

Length of Pipe – uPVC pipes manufactured according to the Thai Industrial Standards are required to clearly specify the length of the pipe in meters. PVC pipe generally has a standard length of 4 meters.

Year of Manufacturing – uPVC pipes manufactured according to the Thai Industrial Standards are required to clearly specify the year of manufacture on the pipe.
